VENGEANCE BY GEORGE JONAS
The Arab Israeli conflict is one of the saddest and most complicated group conflicts of our times , with no neat, clear cut solutions in sight . The chain of aggressions and counteraggressions just keeps on getting longer and longer , which is the premise in Vengeance by George Jonas .
In this intense first hand account of a Mossad agent's operation with his team to avenge the killing of Israeli athletes in the 1972 Munich Games attack , George Jonas has crafted a chilling narrative . Though we might never know with absolute certainty what actually transpired , yet coming directly from Avner , the Mossad agent who led the mission , we get the best vantage point we could hope to .
Written in a narrative format , at times I felt as if I was going through a thriller fiction than an actual intelligence operation . But only to be knocked back into reality the very next moment with some barebone naked incident that only the real can entail . As Jonas remarks , Avner only feels that violence is only breeding more counterviolence . This actually is a running theme , with Avner constantly battling his doubts about the mission in particular and aggressive counterintelligence as a policy in general .
And the personal story of Avner and his own relationship with Mossad is another side narrative . And to say the least it is equally disturbing and thought provoking .
All in all, if you are a fan of non fiction , or if you have an interest in the Israel problem , this book would make for compulsive reading . And it's narrative form makes for engaging writing which acts as gentle foil to the pain and tension of the main geopolitical theme.
For those who go on and read the book, I hope it provides you with the deeper insight into this problem , and what's more the human cost that people are having to pay in this unfortunate saga in human history !!
